Question: From Indiana, USA: My 5 year old son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes last year. He has good HBA1C numbers (7.5) but has a lot of fluctuating numbers during the week. Would multiple shots of 3 or more a day help? What about the insulin pump? Answer: A glycohemoglobin of 7.5 in a 5 year old is not at all bad. By "fluctuating," how many blood sugars are low? That really is the worrisome question. If there are not not many lows, maybe things are okay. Diabetes management is a series of choices. Read about some of them here at Children with Diabetes.
