There's diabetes in our family. How are we going to be able to prevent our other family members from getting diabetes?

Answer:

A great question, without an answer in 1999, but here are some thoughts:

  1. Diabetes, Type 1, the autoimmune type: Family members should participate in the DPT-1 trial. Ask your endocrinologist about a center near you.

  2. Infants: some centers are screening for the genes that are associated with diabetes. Infants at risk could be followed for signs of autoimmune disease in the pancreas.
