Question: From Lanarkshire, Scotland:
Our newborn nephew, weighing 5 pounds 8 ounces, was put on a drip to raise his blood sugar level. We were wondering if this could be a sign of diabetes or if this was a common thing with newborn babies.
Answer:
This is common (especially in quite small babies). Unless there is a close family history of diabetes (mum or dad) then he's at no increased risk.
