Question: From St. Louis, Missouri, USA:
My 5 year old nephew was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just 5 days ago. He was born 11 weeks early, weighing just 3 lbs. 4 oz., and had no adverse effects from that. Is there any connection between prematurity and type 1 diabetes?
Answer:
I consulted with a pediatric colleague of mine who specializes in premature babies. He stated that there is not convincing evidence at this time supporting prematurity as a cause of diabetes.
