Question:

From San Francisco, California, USA:

I would like to know the side effects and complications in Type 1 diabetics who smoke marihuana. My question is directed to help my daughter (15 years old), IDDM since she was 11 years old.

Answer:

The main problem of taking any drugs in type 1 diabetes is the problem of hypoglycemia unawareness, especially if excessive drugs are taken. However, I don't know of any evidence that marijuana accelerates any diabetic complications, unlike cigarette smoking which clearly does.
