Question: From Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA:
My son has had Diabetes Type 1 for just over a year. He is 12 years old. Last week he broke his ankle and will be in a cast for 4 weeks. Do I need to be concerned about his recuperation?
Answer:
You don't need to be especially concerned over the union of the fracture on account of his diabetes; but the stress and the immobilisation will both tend to increase his insulin needs although he may counteract that by eating less.
