Question:

From El Paso,Texas, USA:

In Type 1 diabetes, do you lose weight from having high blood sugars, or by having high blood sugars and no insulin?

Answer:

The underlying reason is lack of insulin. Without enough or properly timed insulin, the blood sugar is high, and the extra sugar is lost through the urine. Fat and muscle breakdown occur without enough insulin. Trying to use this approach for weight loss is very dangerous and may lead to earlier medical complications of diabetes.
