Question: From Council Hill, Oklahoma, USA:
My niece is 11 years old. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes approximately 1 year ago. She became ill yesterday and the doctors say she has protein and sugar in her urine. They have placed her in the hospital. What does this indicate and just how serious is this?
Answer:
She may have a urine infection - usually easily treated. The sugar is an indication that her diabetes is not under good control at the moment.
