Question: From Buffalo, New York, USA:
Have there ever been any deaths related to hypoglycemia from a person or child who has been on the pump?
Answer:
No one here (at Barbara Davis) has heard of a hypoglycemic pump death.
Additional comments from Dr. Larry Deeb:
I don't want to create urban legends, so "I don't know" is the right answer. Can it run away and give hundreds of units: no. Can you get low: sure.
Additional comments from Stephanie Schwartz, diabetes nurse specialist:
Studies show that there is less hypoglycemia when pumps are used compared to giving insulin by injection.
