Question:

From America On-Line:

I am a 28 year old type 1 diabetic. Does blood sugar rise or fall when you first become pregnant?

Answer:

Your blood sugar can go either way. It depends on how well you are eating, and also the increased insulin resistance due to placental hormones. Either way close attention to your glucose values and frequent adjustments of insulin are usually required.

Additional comments from Lois Schmidt Finney, diabetes dietitian:

The blood glucose values usually fall in the first trimester, then gradually rise, so insulin needs also rise as the second and third trimester arrive. But you will need to work closely with your diabetes team and stay on top of the blood glucose values.
