From New Delhi, India:
My fiance is 18 years old. She has had diabetes since the age of 8. What precautions should we both take at the time of her pregnancy and what type of precautions should she take in her diet during pregnancy?
Of primary importance is good glucose control prior to conception. The fasting blood sugar should be 60-90 mg/dl and the 1 hour postprandial blood sugar should be less than 130 mg/dl. The hemoglobin A1c should be in the normal range. This should be maintained for at least one month prior to conception and during the pregnancy. Consultation with dietitian will be helpful in maintaining good glucose control.
