Question:

From Sydney, New South Wales, Australia:

My partner is 28 years old and has type 1 diabetes, diagnosed 10 years ago. She has now been on Humalog for 18 months, and has never had better control of her blood sugar levels. We are planning a pregnancy and would like an update on the progress of any clinical trials of Humalog and pregnancy. I am worried that changing insulins at this stage may do more harm than good.

Answer:

At this time I am not aware of any completed clinical trials of Humalog and pregnancy. I have used Humalog with good results and no apparent adverse fetal effects. Therefore, I would suggest continuing with the Humalog at this time.

Additional comments from Dr. Bill Quick:

In an earlier question and answer, the issue of lack of information about safety during pregnancy, and a preliminary report of problems during pregnancy while using Humalog, was discussed. I've not seen any further concerns since then.
