Question:

From Benton, Kentucky, USA:

Can a person with type 1 diabetes give blood? How does donating blood affect the blood sugar?

Answer:

A person with type 1 diabetes can give blood under most circumstances. The Red Cross has certain guidelines that must be followed. For more information, see Give the gift of life. Give blood. Giving blood should not dramatically affect blood sugar -- make sure you drink lots of fluids and have a snack before giving blood.
