Question: From Edmore, Michigan, USA: My husband has type 2 diabetes diagnosed two and half years ago. His feet are totally dead and the pain and numbness has moved to just below his knees in the past year. How long do you have to have diabetes to get major peripheral neuropathy? Answer: It is unusual to have neuropathy before at least five years of diabetes. It is possible that your husband's blood sugar was high before you realized he had diabetes. We know that in type 2  diabetes, the blood sugar may be elevated for years before the diagnosis is made. (Sometimes, people find out they have type 2 diabetes when they go to the doctor to find out why they have symptoms of neuropathy!)
