Question: From Glen Cove, New York, USA: My 10 month old daughter was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I understand that it takes a few weeks to regulate the insulin amount with someone so young, but her numbers are still relatively high (400-550 mg/dl [22.2-30.1 mmol/L]). I am very concerned about her growth being stunted. She was always in the 95th percentile for height. Then at nine months she had no additional growth, and she was diagnosed a few weeks later. Can this be prevented from happening? Answer: I expect the glucose was high for a while before she was diagnosed. She might have stopped growing for a while. When her diabetes is under control, she should grow just fine. I understand the glucoses will swing, but the overall effect will allow her to grow.
