Question:

From Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada:

Our daughter was diagnosed at the age of seven and a half months old with type 1 diabetes. Would this make her one of the youngest in Canada or North America? What is the percentage of children diagnosed at this age?

Answer:

Not the youngest, but certainly one of the younger patients with type 1 diabetes. There are extremely rare cases of neonatal diabetes and also many diagnosed under the age of one to two years with classical type 1 diabetes mellitus.
