Question:

From America On-Line:

Is there any connection between an untreated high fever and the onset of diabetes in children? How long before diabetes shows up after the insult?

Answer:

Children with type 1 diabetes have had the disease for months to years before we actually diagnose it. That is, they have the pancreatic insult that will lead to diabetes. However, they seem to frequently be sick just before we realize the clinical disease because the glucose has been abnormal, but we didn't know it. The illness tips them over into real sickness and the diabetes is discovered. Hope I made that clear: the fever is really a red herring.
