Question:

From Omaha, Nebraska, USA:

What are the chances of a woman with type 1 diabetes giving birth to babies who go on to develop diabetes?

Answer:

Predicting diabetes is difficult since there are so many factors involved. However, there is some objective testing that can be done in children that if positive can give a risk of developing diabetes.

[Editor's comment: Typically, there is a 3-5% chance that a woman with type 1 diabetes will have a child with diabetes. SS]
