Question:

From Gary, Indiana, USA:

My five year old daughter just developed type 1 diabetes. From the time she started eating regular food, she just ate carbohydrates (like rice, noodles, cheese, bread, a lot of milk, etc.) Can this have caused the type 1 diabetes?

Answer:

No, I don't think so. Type 1A diabetes is an autoimmune disease, and we still don't know the etiologic factors. Sugar is not among them for sure.
