Question: From Miami, Florida, USA:
My 11 year old was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Is there any chance that the hyperglycemia was caused by a thyroid problem instead of a pancreatic deficiency?
Answer:
No, not to my knowledge. type 1A (autoimmune) and thyroid disease in children are both often autoimmune. So 20% of kids with diabetes have thyroid disease, but it is not causal.
