Question:

From a diabetes nurse educator in Santa Barbara, California, USA:

I have a 30 year old female who has type 1 diabetes, is on an insulin pump, and who would like to climb Mt. Whitney this summer. Is there some sort of "Ultimate Sports" group for adults with type 1?

Answer:

Contact DESA - the Diabetes Exercise and Sports Association (formerly the International Diabetic Athletes Association). DESA has chapters throughout the US and internationally as well.

Dave Panofsky, an experienced climber with type 1 diabetes, of IDEA 2000, the group of diabetic climbers who made the recent successful summit of Argentina's Mt. Aconcagua (22,834-ft) has written an excellent piece IDEA 2000 (International Diabetic Expedition Aconcagua 2000) called "Considerations for the Diabetic Climber" which describes how they kept their meters and supplies protected from the extreme cold.
