I am 52 years old, have had diabetes for 33 years, and I am really having a hard time losing weight. I have always been able to maintain my weight, but for the last five years I just can't seem to take it off. My stomach is huge (my legs are toothpicks). I have to admit that exercise is not one of my favorite things to do, and I'm not in very good physical shape. I would be willing to do anything to get rid of this fat. I weigh 170 pounds, and I am 5 feet 8 inches tall. I am considered to be small boned. I'm sure I would feel a lot better if I didn't have to carry this spare tire around my middle. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.This grandma wants to be around for awhile!

Answer:

The weight gain is a frequent problem. Have you discussed this with your physician? Frequent excessive insulin therapy can be a problem, especially when you are eating all the time to avoid hypoglycemia. The other issue you mentioned, exercise, is critical. Even though it is not the most fun, it is important and will help you lose weight and improve your physical conditioning. I would advise you to speak with a physician about an exercise prescription. This is a specific exercise plan just for you. You might also talk to your physician about having a stress test done before you begin your exercise plan.
