Question:

From Fullerton, California, USA:

Three weeks ago, my best friend, who is 25 years old and thin, was diagnosed with diabetes when she went into the ER and had a blood sugar of 804 mg/dl [44.7 mmol/L]. She has been told her pancreas just "quit" working and is now on insulin. Is this classified as type 1 diabetes?

Answer:

Based on the information you've provided, your friend clearly has diabetes, and it is most likely to be type 1 diabetes. We keep an updated research page on the latest developments in diabetes which should be a good resource for you.
