Question:

From Antioch, California, USA:

My son is 25 months old, and his grandmother insists on constantly giving him nothing but sugary foods. Can he get diabetes as a result of ingesting too much sugar?

Answer:

No, there is no relationship between type 1 diabetes and eating lots of sweets. However, if there is a family history of type 2 diabetes and this child becomes overweight, that will increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes as a child. You might want to express your concern if there is type 2 diabetes in the family and suggest limiting the sweets.
