Question: From Maryland, USA:
I am a middle-aged male whohas type 2 diabetes treated with low dose Glucophage [metformin], diet, and exercise. Part of my exercise regimen is weight lifting and body building. Can anabolic steroids be used under supervision? What are the primary health concerns with their use?
Answer:
I would not recommend anabolic steroids to a person with type 2 diabetes. They may have bad effects on the development of retinopathy and nephropathy, in addition to the idea that prescribing anabolic steroids is not legal for that purpose.

[Editor's comment: As Dr. Lane points out, it is illegal in the US to prescribe anabolic steroids for body-building. These medications are considered "controlled substances", and their use is severely restricted by law. WWQ]
