Question:

From Dublin, Ireland:

What is the justification for putting a six year old, recently diagnosed child on a low fat diet?

Answer:

I don't know of any justification for placing young children under the age of five on low fat diets, unless there is a hereditary lipid issue which is apparent at the time. Moderation in fat is a good thing for all ages, but moderation does not translate to low fat. Older children and adults with diabetes should moderate fat intake in order to reduce the risk for heart disease, especially if blood lipid (fat) levels are out of the recommended range as there is an increased risk of heart disease with diabetes.
