Question:

From Marianna, Florida, USA:

I have type 1 diabetes, I donate blood regularly, and I was told by my doctor that as long as I felt well I could donate. Aside from the social contribution I've been told donating blood is healthy for you, so I've continued. Is it? How?

Answer:

There are data that blood donation might be associated with a lesser risk of heart attack. It seems the iron you lose when you give blood might actually be good for you. That is not a tight fact, just an association.
