Question:

From Edinburgh, Scotland:

I have had diabetes for almost four years, and at the moment, I have a real bad sore throat, and feel anxious about it because my blood sugars don't seem to be going down. Is it normal to lose a wee bit of control when ill?

Answer:

Yes, it is frequently noted that the blood sugars rise with intercurrent illnesses. The reason for this appears to be that illness brings on the production of stress hormones that antagonize the effects of insulin.
