From Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India:
What are all the tests that should be conducted and when in order to maintain good control of diabetes?
In simple terms, you need many tests to manage your diabetes to achieve the best metabolic control and the best quality of life. To address your question more in depth, tests can be divided into:
- Immediate tests -- Those tests you take because you need to monitor your blood sugar and urine at any given moment in order to tune or adjust your daily therapy (home tests many times over a day).
- Routine tests -- Those you take regularly at your hospital clinic or at a lab and are help you make long-term adjustments in your therapy such as the hemoglobin A1c.
- Periodic test (usually annually) -- Those taken to screen for complications and related disorders (dilated eye exam, urine microalbumin, thyroid function studies, celiac disease screening, blood lipid tests, etc.
