Question:

From Wayne City, Illinois, USA:

How do you determine when your child is "ready" for an insulin pump?

Answer:

This varies by age. In general, a school age child is ready for a pump when they want to be on a pump and are mature enough to do some basic troubleshooting and to make sure they get their doses of insulin (even if someone else has to help with telling them how much to give). The parent or caretaker needs to know how to do carb/insulin ratios and corrective doses. An adolescent should want the pump for its increased lifestyle flexibility (rather than just "no more shots") and be able to do carbohydrate/insulin ratios and corrective doses on their own (in my estimation).
