Question:

From Annandale, Virginia, USA:

We go by the carbs listed on the side of the box of foods. If it says 5% alcohol sugar, what is that? I know that means it must have some type of sugar. Should we avoid those as well?

Answer:

Sugar alcohols do not affect the blood glucose like sugars do. They have about half the calories that sugar does per gram (2/gram) The total carbohydrate should include any source of calories from ingredients. Sugar alcohols can cause diarrhea if too much is eaten.
