Question: From Union City, California, USA: My brother has just started his new medications (Glucophage [metformin] and Avandia [rosiglitazone]), and his blood sugar is more than 200 mg/dl [ 11.1 mmol/L] most of the time. What can he do to control his blood sugar when it reaches more than 400 mg/dl [22.2 mmol/L]? Answer: These medications take weeks to months to work. Tell your brother to speak to his doctor about whether he needs a faster acting medicine such as an insulin secretagogue [Prandin (repaglinide) or Starlix (nateglinide)] or insulin temporarily until the other medicine kicks in.
