Question: From Houston, Texas, USA: A friend of mine has type 2 diabetes. She checks her blood sugar four times a day. Her morning fasting blood sugars tend to be higher than lunch and dinner. What would cause this? Answer: One of the defects of Type 2 diabetes is an inappropriate production of sugar or glucose in the liver, especially during the night while we are sleeping. The best medicine to treat that defect is metformin (Glucophage). Your friend should ask her health care provider if she is a candidate for metformin.
