Question: From Hallandale, Florida, USA:
My daughter was just diagnosed with type 1 last week. We had scheduled a seven day cruise long before the diagnosis and will still be going. Do you have any suggestions on how we can measure and avoid the temptation of all the food on board?
Answer:
With all the tempting food on board, it will be a challenge, but not impossible, for a newly diagnosed child with diabetes. But, with all of the extra fun and activity, occasional higher carbohydrate treats could be worked into a meal plan. Indulging with smaller portions is an ideal way to control blood sugars. Be sure to continue with frequent monitoring of blood sugars to ensure optimal blood sugar control. Have fun while on the cruise.
