Question:

From Fort Walton Beach, Florida, USA:

The web page Planning a Pregnancy says, "Start folic acid supplementation. Babies of mothers with diabetes are at increased risk of spina bifida. Folic acid (folate) has been shown to reduce this risk. The most recent recommended amount is 4 to 5 mg/day which is much more than in prenatal vitamins." I am having trouble finding a doctor who says they have heard of this recommendation. Can you tell me where/who this recommendation came from?

Answer:

This is based on Quantifying the effect of folic acid.
