Question: From Shadyside, Ohio, USA:
How common is it for siblings to have type 1 diabetes? I have two daughters who both have type 1.
Answer:
In a big pediatric/adolescent diabetes practice, this would be very variable, but approximately three to 10 such families per 500 kids with diabetes would be an estimate. So, it is somewhat rare. The actual genetic risks for siblings to also have diabetes is about 2 to 5%.
