Question:

From Suffern, New York, USA:

My nine year old with type 1 has chicken pox. Is there anything special that I need to know?

Answer:

I would make sure to review your sick day management strategies. Make sure to check blood sugars frequently to intervene quickly for high and low blood sugars. I would also suggest checking ketones with every void during times of illness. Moderate or large ketones suggest that she may be becoming ill with her diabetes in addition to being ill from chicken pox.
