Question: From Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt:
Does 101 mg/dl [5.6 mmol/L] as a fasting blood sugar level indicate diabetes, knowing that the post-prandial reading is always in the range of 135 to 160 [7.5 to 8.9 mmol/L]?
Answer:
A fasting blood sugar, after fasting for at least eight hours, of 100 to 125 mg/dl [5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L] indicates pre-diabetes. A blood sugar of 126 mg/dl [7 mmol/L] or higher is considered diabetes. The readings must occur on two separate days.
