Question: From Sussex, England:
How quickly after conception can pregnancy lead to higher blood sugar levels?
Answer:
In type 1 diabetes, a change in glucose levels can occur soon after conception. In fact, if a woman who is of reproductive age suddenly experiences problems with blood sugar control, then pregnancy should be ruled out as a possible cause. Typically, women experience insulin resistance and develop hyperglycemia. Although, sometimes because of altered appetite and other changes in metabolism, hypoglycemia may occur. So, a change in either direction can occur.
