Question:

From Rochester, New York, USA:

I've had two episodes where I wake up in the morning with extremely sore calf muscles and the sides of my tongue shredded and bruised. I assume it's diabetes related, but I've never heard of these symptoms before. What do you think is happening?

Answer:

Did you have a low blood sugar with a resulting seizure? It would be important to make sure you are not having low blood sugars in the night. I would make sure to get up and check blood sugars in the middle of the night. If you have values less than 80 mg/dl [4.4 mmol/L], this is serious and needs to be discussed with your physician.
