From Maryland, USA:
My six year old daughter has type 1 and wears a pump. Her cholesterol is slightly elevated. We'd like to give her rice bran policosanol. Is there anything about it that would be harmful to her?
If you are willing to gamble a bit, probably not much harm. Some of the high fiber product nutriceuticals work reasonably well without much side effects. This has nothing to do with the pump, probably genetic hyperlipidemia and likely others in the family have the same. Key issues are how high is the LDL, the total cholesterol, how low is the HDL and what is the fasting triglyceride level? If you have your health care team monitor her lipid levels two to four times a year, you'll know if this is working or not and when you might want to consider other lipid lowering medications.
