Question:

From New Delhi, India:

My nine-year-old son has type 1. Are sugar free drinks and other sugar free items safe for him?

Answer:

Sugar free foods and beverages are acceptable for children with diabetes, although, be aware they may still contain some amount of carbohydrate (although usually less). Also, be aware that sugar free foods and drinks may contain some forms of sugar alcohols which may cause a laxative effect in those that overconsume. Moderation is key with regards to eating and drinking these type of products. Otherwise, they pose no risk to children with diabetes.
