Question: From Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada:
My granddaughter has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Is she allowed to have basic popcorn, salted or unsalted?
Answer:
Yes, your granddaughter can enjoy popcorn. Popcorn can be a healthy snack for children with diabetes. You just have to know how to work the carbohydrate count into her meal or snacks.
I would suggest you, your granddaughter's caregiver and your granddaughter meet with a registered dietitian, if you haven't already, who specializes in diabetes meal planning in order to develop an individualized meal plan. If you need a referral to a dietitian, ask your granddaughter's physician for one.
