Back to Kids' Voices Billy Butler
Billy's Picture Hi, my name is Billy Butler I am six years old, I have a 5 year old sister named Ashley and a 1 year old brother, his name is Joe. I attend Kindergarden in the Chicago area. I was diagnosed with Diabetes only three weeks ago.

About a week before Christmas 1996 I seemed to be going to the bathroom a million times a night, my mom, who happens to be a nurse, wanted my doctor to take a look at me. I went to the Doctor, and my mom asked him to take a urine test to see if I had any sugar in my urine. The Dr. said, "I know what you're thinking...... and its NOT Diabetes, but I will run the test if it makes you feel better." Well a few hours later the Dr. called and said I needed to be admitted to the local children's hospital. I arrived where they had a bed waiting for me in the coolest room I've ever seen. This Children's hospital had opened about three weeks before I was admitted.

Once I arrived, the resident Dr. informed my parents my blood sugar was about 1200!! and that I have Diabetes. Mom and Dad were very upset about the whole thing. My Dad even mentioned something about "Knocking out" my doctor, who said I didn't have Diabetes. I don't know why, I felt fine and had my own Nintendo in my room. It was really a pain getting an IV in my arm. I also got pretty mad when they came in to stick my finger in the middle of the night. By the second night in the hospital I was checking my own blood sugar levels (along with any one who came to vist me in the hospital!)

I was released from the hospital after four days, my parents were soooo happy to see me back at home and doing the regular things I like to do. My parents are always reading different things about Diabetes, and explaining them to me. They held a class at my house the other day to explain to all my aunts and uncles the different things they need to know, for when they babysit me. During the class I gave myself my first shot, my parents watched me and said I did a great job.

I'm really getting good at taking my shots and blood tests, Mom and Dad said I will be just fine!

Please feel free to drop me an E-mail, I like to hear from other kids with Diabetes.

Thanks,
Billy
