  Back to Kids' Voices Samantha
Samantha's photo Hi! My name is Samantha and I'm 9 years old. I was diagnosed with diabetes in March 1995. I'm in the 4th grade and live in North Carolina. I don't like having diabetes very much. I feel kind of left out because no one else in my family has diabetes. I don't like taking shots but I like going to camp. I went 2 years ago and had a lot of fun but I got home sick right at the end. I have to take 3 shots every day. And I check my blood sugar 3 times when I'm in school and 4 times when I'm not. I don't have to take any of my diabetes stuff to school except if we go on a field trip.

All my friends know I have diabetes but it bugs me when they ask a lot of questions about it. We try to do things to raise money for the diabetes association and last year we went to a bike-a-thon. My mom and brother rode 16 miles and me and my dad volunteered at rest stops. It was pretty cool. It's hard, but sometimes I can find fun things about having diabetes. I REALLY HATE going to the doctor and having my blood taken every 3 months but I REALLY LIKE my doctor. My brother is only 7 and he thinks it's awful that I have to take shots. He tries to help me watch what I eat which is nice but sometimes I wish he had diabetes.

I love to go horseback riding. We don't have a horse but I take lessons one day a week. I hope one day I can have my own horse. I really love all animals. I love to listen to music, especially country music. I also like to write stories and things. I LOVE to watch TGIF and think Corey's brother on Boy Meets World is really cute. I like Jonathan Taylor Thomas, too!

I think having a computer is great. Especially being on the internet and getting to meet new friends who have diabetes. I hope someone will write me back. I would like pen pals of any age, boy or girl. You write me and I'll write you!! BYE!!
