Hello! I am Amanda Skinner. I am 15 years old. I was diagnosed on Dec. 8, 1996. I went to the doctors because of a pain in my side. My doctor then sent me to the hospital, which is right behind the doctor's office. They ran some tests on me and then said that I would have to go to Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. I was really scared. Then my mom was like it will be okay. My mother is also a diabetic, but she is Type 2. So, I sort of knew a little about diabetes. I was in denial for a while. Then I was like well I guess that I do and that I should listen. The one thing that I was mad at, was that I could not have any more candy. I lived for candy. At least I am allowed to have a snack a week and that is usually candy. My blood sugars are really good. My three month check-ups have all been my range is 5.6 or lower. They are really happy with the way that I have been managing my diebetes.I really enjoy playing softball. I also am in 4-H. It is really fun. I am the secretary of my club. I have 5 rabbits which I LOVE very much. I have 2 horses. I also have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I have a sister who is 20, and a brother who is 24. I like when I have to take shots or have to test my blood sugar. I usually do it right in front of them, because I know how much they can't stand it.
Last week, we found out that my dad was diabetic. So, I have been keeping him straight. He gets really mad sometimes, because he can not have what he wants. It is pretty cool, since now I can tell my dad what he can and can not have. He has to listen to me.
When I went to Walt Disney World with my friends and their parents. We had a great time, but the whole time we were there the parents were all worried, I told them that I know what I am doing and they said Good, We will let you go and do what you have to when you have to. They were really worried, I was going to have them give me the shot and stuff. It was funny to see their reactions.
All in all, I have to say, that diabetes is not bad at all. Sometimes it is really annoying. But, hey that is life. Right?
