Back to Kids' Voices Alyssa Nicole Banda
Hi, my name is Alyssa Nicole Banda, I am 5 years old, (but I'll be 6 on Feb. 17). I was diagnosed with diabetes when I was 23 months old at the University of Michigan Hospital, in Ann Arbor MI. I now live in Alaska with my family. My dad is in the Army and stationed at Fort Wainwright. I am in Kindergarten and I love it! I check my own blood sugar but my mom and dad give me my shots. The finger pokes don't bother me anymore but I still do not like the shots. I have one little sister named Dianna and one little brother named Anthony. My favorite hobbies are playing with my baby dolls, coloring, and playing in the snow. I love going to school and playing with my friends.

When I was 22 months old I got the chicken pox and the doctors said that's what set off my diabetes. After the chicken pox I started getting really sick and was always thirsty, so my mom took me to the doctors and that's when they told me that I had diabetes. They put me in the hospital and I was there for a week, my mom and dad stayed with me but it was pretty scary. The doctors and nurses were really nice and the diabetes educators, Margie and Denise were really nice too. After I got out of the hospital I had to go back every 3 months to make sure everything is going ok. But now that I'm in Alaska I see a doctor out of Washington every 3 months, he is pretty nice too. Well I guess I will be going, if you want to email me my address is Copper@Mosquitonet.com.
