Hi, My name is Jennifer and I am 6 years old. I've been living with diabetes since June 9, 1998. It was very hard on my family when they found out. We spent that summer learning to live with it. A month after I came home from the hospital, I was doing my own shots and testing myself. Nowadays, I let mom do it for me, sometimes. I am still in my honeymoon stage. My sister, Tiffany, who is 11 months younger than me, helps me with the tests and holds my hand.
My Kindergarten teacher and nurse really looked after me. They made sure I tested, got a shot and ate the right amount. I am thankful for that. I've continued doing my activities such as gymnastics, swimming and learning to play the violin, except now I can focus better and accomplish more. I also love taking art classes with my sister. I spend the summers at our beach house and this summer I'll be going to a diabetes camp. I hope to learn more about managing diabetes.
There are two good things that came out of me becoming diabetic. First, I've made many new friends as a result of going to meetings related to diabetes and the second thing is that it brought our family closer than ever. My dad believes the cure is out there and someone has to find it.
