| Hi, my name is Jessica, I am 6 years old and I'm in first grade. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on June 17, 1998 at the age of 5. I started on 4 injections per day. I hated taking the shots, but I got used to them. I was even able to do them myself when I started kindergarten. I was doing well until I started school.
My schedule became very hectic and my blood sugars went crazy. I was having lots of lows and I couldn't feel them. My Mom and Dad were very worried. They started talking to me about insulin pumps. I started pumping March 29, 1999. I have a blue MiniMed 507C. I was afraid that inserting the sets would hurt, and I was right! But my parents found out about EMLA cream, and now they don't hurt at all. I am doing much better now. I get to sleep late if I want to and I can eat when I'm hungry, not when the clock says it's time. I love my pump!
