Back to Kids' Voices Megan
Hello! My name is Megan Tichenor. I have been diagnosed since I was 2 and a half. My mom took me into the emergency room when I wasn't hungry, but thirsty, and I wet my bed 3 times in an hour and a half. We lived in Plymouth, Wisconsin then. My mom and dad broke down in tears when they found out the news. My grandma came into our house to watch over my 3 sisters, Dawn was 13, Christie 11, and April 5. I was in the hospital for about 2 weeks. When they tested it, my blood glucose came to about over 600.

As time went on, my diabetes got better. But my spirit was still down. Being a Megan, I was very stubborn and strong willed; and strong. I thought that God hated me for torturing me. I didn't know any better! My parents always talked to me about diabetes, but I still could not accept it. I often ran out in the middle of the road, on purpose, when there was heavy traffic. My mom was petrified! She did not know what to do.

And on top of that, when I was 5, I came down with ammonia. I was in the hospital for almost a month. My mom was with me night and day. I am so grateful to have her. After I was home, my family threw me a " Welcome Home, Meg!" Party. My "pre-schooler friends" were there! I though it was just the neatest thing. Up until I was 11, when we moved to South Dakota, I went down to Children's Hospital, In Milwaukee for tests and to have a meal plan for me. To tell you the truth, I loved food! So I didn't exactly stay on it. My mom tried to make me but, like I said, I am stubborn and strong willed.

Now that we have been living in Nebraska, for the past year, I have been going down to Omaha for my diabetes check-ups. I am insulin dependent. I take Humulin Regular and Humulin NPH. I give myself my injections and glucose tests. I give my injections in either my arms, legs, or stomach. I perfer the stomach because it is less painful. I am really lucky to have such supporting family.

I am 12 years old. My friends are Nicole, Mandy, Katie, Traci, and Kayla. I have 15 cats. Only 3 live inside. Oreo is 6 and weighs 25 pounds. He is my buddy. I also have some fish and 3 dogs, Peanut 8 months, Jo 8 months, and Tippy 3 years. I have 2 nieces and a nephew. My hobbies are sports, music, singing, writing, playing with my pets, phone, computer, and hanging with my buddies.

I hope that you all enjoyed this and learned something from my experience. If you have any questions or comments please e-mail me at
